It takes many people who dedicate much of their time and money to helping me. Endura Racing 2012 Team Launch

London Bike Show 14th Jan 2012

I didn’t have the best National Championships in January either, after deciding to ride only in the time trial and ship the Road Race I was very disappointed with my 10th place finish. It wasn’t my goal for the year but I still had put a lot of pressure on myself to do a good result  in Ballarat, but for what ever reason I didn’t have the legs on the day. I was up against some pretty hot competition but looking at my power files from the race now it’s easily seen that I wasn’t having a good day which makes it a little frustrating. Anyway so that was done I have a very big and important season coming up with Endura  so upon my very brief 1 day return visit to Brisbane it was off to London again for a quick 1 day visit. It was awesome to see all my old team mates and meet the new guys too.   All the Aussies telling everyone about their great summer, and all the Euros telling us about their freezing winters.

Now I don’t want to complain but wow….it is COLD here. I knew it would be but for some reason I just thought that Girona would be a lot warmer than what it is …maybe I am just soft? …No that can’t be it ;) it must be cold. It is really nice to be back home. Well my European home anyway) Sadly for me I am only here a week then on Sunday we are off to Mallorca for a 2 week training camp and then the first races of the year start in February with the Mallorca Challenge.

 Team Presentation

The 2012 Endura Racing team presentation took place  at The London Bike Show in front of a large audience of media, special guests and show visitors. The launch event brought the full team to London ahead of a season where we will once again race against the biggest teams in world cycling whilst tackling an exciting UK calendar in what promises to be a great year for British road racing.

Event MC David Harmon introduced the event with a film which highlighted some of the key wins and standout performances from our 2011 season, where the team finished as the best UK based UCI Continental team in the UCI Europe Tour rankings.

Over the course of the event new signings Russ Downing, Zak Dempster, Dean Windsor, Jon Tiernan-Locke, Ian Bibby and Jonny MacEvoy had a chance to tell the crowd about how pleased they were to join the strengthened Endura Racing team and of their ambitions for the year ahead. Key members of the 2011 squad also spoke of their excitment of more firepower being added into the mix

The team's General Manager was joined on stage by Director Sportifs Julian Winn and Alex Sans Vega, Head Soigneur Ben Jenkins and our Service Course manager Richard Branston. Smith was keen to point out that the team is keen to build on a strong 2011 and continue to punch above our weight in the races across Europe and beyond, saying:
We’re not going to make up the numbers – we want to want to win stages. I know we’ll be fighting with WorldTour teams in these races and it’s going to be very difficult, but we want to have success in these races. It’s about spreading the wins throughout the team. I want to see everyone of these sixteen guys win a race this year.

Endura MTB Racing's Oli Beckingsale was also at the event and spoke about his desire to return to the top level of mountain bike XC racing after his horror hip injury at a UCI World Cup in the Czech Republic last August. Oli has battled back from major surgery and is aiming to race a full calendar again.

2011

Personally I have never really been that into New Years Celebrations. My feelings are a little bit mixed on the subject. While I feel that it is just another marketing strategy, another commercial holiday put in place to simply make money. I feel the true meaning of “New Years”, has been a little lost on people. It is simply a time to reflect on the year or even years gone by and a time to bring new changes into your life. For me it is a time to reflect and be thankful and grateful for everything in my life. I guess I kind treat it still a little like Christmas.

New years has made me realise one very important thing this year. I am one really lucky guy. I mean Look at what I do for a living? At the End of 2011, I guess I need to say thanks, I won’t list all the people that need to be thanked but certainly a big thanks to Endura in Scotland to whom without I would be without a job. Endura racing(the team)  the Staff , team mates and anyone involved thanks. What an awesome year.

As my now ex-team mate Jack Bauer said “Sometimes I think we should be paying to do what we do , not getting paid”. The More I think about that the more I realise how lucky we are, and how grateful I am. Whenever I am lacking that little bit of motivation I just think about that.

I think as a Professional Cyclist or maybe just sports people in general we all get a little wrapped up in our own worlds too much and I too am guilty of this. I think when your passion is your job than of course it consumes you, I feel cycling is particularly bad for this. I sit here at home in Brisbane with my loving family and Friends and I look back at 2011 and think “WOW”, what a year huh ? To be paid to do what I love is a privilege and it is not a right. Let’s be honest I am not saving the world here. I think it is very important for all of us no matter who we are or what we do, to just be happy and grateful. I think that if you are reading this then we are all not too bad off compared to the other millions of people around the world.

I guess to sum up. I am grateful for a wonderful job and a wonderful life. More importantly I am grateful for a loving bunch of family and friends to whom I owe so much of my wonderful life. So to 2011 Cheers and too 2012 well  I can’t wait to kick of the  season, it is sure to be a big one for Endura Racing and it is a privilege to be here.

Happy New Year everyone, enjoy and be grateful.
